I really enjoyed reading John Ahern's accounts of his itchy-footed travel adventures. It wraps you in from the very first pages and keeps you going until the end. The effective juxtaposition of humour and death, challenges and entertains in a way that engages the reader making a difficult subject accessible. The Jia is an old, noble family in the middle period of the Qing-Dynasty China.
